World’s first Mithun Churpi produced in Arunachal

Itanagar, Mar 19 (UNI) In a groundbreaking achievement, Tadang Tamut, a progressive Mithun farmer from Jomlo Mongku Mithun Farmers' Federation in Arunachal Pradesh's Siang district, has successfully produced the world’s first Mithun Churpi in collaboration with the National Research Centre for Mithun (NRCM) in Medziphema, Nagaland, official sources said on Wednesday.
The Mithun Churpi was showcased at the Mithun Mela cum Technology Injection Program in Dem village, Keyi Panyor district, marking a significant milestone in Mithun-based entrepreneurship and technology transfer, they said.
Churpi, also known as "Durkha," "Chogo," or "Chugo," is a traditional hard cheese made from yak or cow milk, commonly consumed in the Himalayan regions of Nepal, Bhutan, Sikkim, Ladakh, and Arunachal Pradesh.
Churpi is known for its hard, chewy texture, often referred to as the "Himalayan chewing gum" and is rich in protein and nutrients. It can be chewed for extended periods, similar to a rock-hard bubble gum that softens with time and saliva.
Arunachal Pradesh is already known for its Yak Churpi, which has received Geographical Indications (GI) recognition.
The development of Mithun Churpi adds a new dimension to the region’s dairy innovation and entrepreneurship, offering sustainable economic opportunities for local farmers, sources added.
