Zero pass percentage in Sirmaur school sparks debate over teacher shortage

Sirmaur, May 20 (UNI) In a shocking revelation, not a single student passed the Class 10 board exams at Government Senior Secondary School Charna in Sirmaur district this year.
All 21 students failed, with the majority struggling in Mathematics and Science, highlighting the deep-rooted issue of chronic teacher shortage.
School Management Committee (SMC) President Bhupendra Singh Verma squarely blamed the state government for the dismal outcome, stating that five key posts—including TGT (Non-Medical), PTI, Computer Teacher, and Principal—have remained vacant since 2023. Despite repeated representations to the Education Minister, local MLA, and education department officials, no action was taken.
Out of 21 students, three secured compartments, but none managed to clear the exams.
The Class12 results were no better—six out of 16 students failed. Frustrated by the continuing decline in academic standards, many parents have decided to withdraw their children from the school. A meeting held on Sunday evening saw consensus among parents to seek better options elsewhere.
Adding to the woes, the school building is reportedly in a dilapidated state. “During the rainy season, it becomes unsafe for children to even sit inside the classrooms,” Verma added.
Similar stories emerged from Government Senior Secondary School Salgran in Lahaul and Spiti, where all three students in Class 12 failed despite the presence of four teachers. Even the Education Minister Rohit Thakur’s home school in Dhar Pauta failed to deliver, with all six students in Class 10 failing—reportedly due to the prolonged absence of the Mathematics teacher.
Ironically, the overall board results in Himachal Pradesh have improved this year. The Class 10 pass percentage rose to 79.08% from 74.61% in 2024, and Class 12 results jumped to 83.16% from 73.76%, but schools like Charna remain stark reminders of the deep systemic neglect.
