ZORO urges separate administration for ethnic Mizos

Aizawl, Mar 16(UNI) The Zo Reunification Organisation (ZORO) called for the creation of a separate administrative arrangement for ethnic Mizos living in the hill areas of conflict-hit Manipur.
The organisation, which advocates for the unification of ethnic Mizos across India, Myanmar, and Bangladesh, submitted a memorandum to the Union Home Minister, asserting that peaceful coexistence between the Meitei majority and ethnic Mizos has become impossible following the outbreak of ethnic violence on March 3, 2023. They argued that a separate administration is now the only feasible solution for ‘Zofate’ (ethnic Mizos) in Manipur.
ZORO also urged Shah to reinstate the Free Movement Regime (FMR), which was revoked by the central government on January 1 this year, requiring border passes for movement between India and Myanmar. The organisation emphasised that the decision has disrupted the traditional and cultural connections between indigenous communities on both sides of the border and appealed for its reconsideration.
Additionally, ZORO strongly opposed the proposed fencing of the Indo-Myanmar border, contending that it would violate indigenous rights recognised by the United Nations. The organisation stressed that fencing the border would impose severe hardships on communities that have historically moved freely across the region.
Zo Reunification Organisation (ZORO) and the Young Mizo Association (YMA) separately met Union Home Minister Amit Shah at Raj Bhavan in Aizawl on Saturday, presenting pressing concerns related to ethnic Mizos in Manipur and humanitarian assistance for refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Mizoram.
Meanwhile, in a separate meeting with YMA leaders, Shah assured that the central government would provide humanitarian aid to the over 41,000 refugees and IDPs currently sheltering in Mizoram this year.
According to a press statement from the YMA’s central committee, the delegation led by its President, Lalhmachhuana, urged the Home Minister to support 33,505 refugees from Myanmar, 5,633 IDPs from Manipur, and 2,217 refugees from Bangladesh, all displaced due to political turmoil and ethnic strife in their respective regions. Shah assured the delegation that the required assistance would be sanctioned within this year.
The discussion also touched upon the suspension of the Free Movement Regime (FMR), with Shah suggesting that a 10-member delegation from the YMA travel to Delhi to hold further discussions with officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
On the issue of including the Mizo language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, the Home Minister stated that several applications are currently under review and that the YMA’s appeal would be considered.
The YMA delegation further sought increased funding to tackle Mizoram’s growing drug menace. In response, Shah advised them to submit a formal appeal to the union Home Secretary. Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, who was present in the meeting, assured that he would personally take up the matter.
Additionally, Shah informed the delegation that the Airports Authority of India (AAI) would initiate improvements to Mizoram’s only airport, Lengpui Airport. He stated that preparatory work would be completed within three months, with construction expected to commence within six months.
Shah arrived in Aizawl on Saturday as part of his three-day visit to the Northeast.
He attended an official ceremony marking the exchange of maps between the Assam Rifles and the Mizoram government, finalising the relocation of the Assam Rifles battalion headquarters from the heart of Aizawl city to Zokhawsang, about 15 km east of the state capital.
After spending the night at the Raj Bhavan, he departed for Guwahati from Lengpui Airport at around 11:30 AM on Sunday.
