'Rent a Garba Partner' Advt offer companions for Navratri in Mumbai

Mumbai, Sep 22 (UNI) Social media advertisements offering people the option to "Rent a Garba Partner" for the upcoming Navratri celebrations have drawn attention in Mumbai, with packages offering male and female companions for Garba events at rates of up to Rs 6,500.
The advertisements, being circulated through Instagram reels and posts, offer different packages described as Silver, Gold and Platinum. The services listed include accompanying customers to Garba events, wearing matching outfits, teaching Garba steps, taking selfies and making reels.
Some of the packages also advertise services such as creating a "fake backstory" for the companion and dropping the customer home after the event.
According to the advertisements cited in a complaint, the charges range from Rs 1,000 for a two-hour package to Rs 6,500 for an all-day service. The advertisements offer both male and female companions.
The promotions have been circulating ahead of the Navratri festival, when large numbers of people are expected to attend Garba and Dandiya events across Mumbai.
The advertisements came to the attention of Borivali MLA Sanjay Upadhyay, who has raised concerns over the nature of the services being offered and sought a police inquiry.
In a letter dated September 22 to the Mumbai Police Commissioner and the DCPs of Zones 11 and 12, Upadhyay forwarded screenshots of the advertisements and requested the police to verify the organisers and the services being offered.
The MLA said such advertisements could potentially lead to fraud, exploitation of women and other illegal activities and urged the police to take preventive action during the festive season.
He sought an immediate inquiry into the advertisers and organisers and requested registration of cases if any offence is established.
Copies of the complaint were also sent to senior police inspectors of Borivali West, Kasturba Marg, MHB, Gorai, Samta Nagar, Dahisar, Charkop and Kandivali police stations.
Upadhyay has also sought an action-taken report from the police.
