Maha Govt forms High-Powered Cabinet Sub-Committee with special powers to tackle severe drought crisis

Mumbai, Sep 22 (UNI) Confronting a difficult drought-like situation across several districts due to prolonged dry spells and withered crops, the Maharashtra government on Tuesday announced the formation of a special Cabinet Sub-Committee to fast-track relief measures.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that the newly constituted panel will be headed by Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule. State Chief Secretary Rajesh Agarwal will serve as the Member Secretary of the committee.
The high-powered sub-committee includes key ministers and leaders representing all three parties of the ruling alliance, ensuring broad-based political coordination. Crucially, the state government has vested the panel with full Cabinet powers, enabling it to take independent policy decisions and implement urgent interventions without procedural delays.
Addressing media persons, CM Fadnavis stated that the committee will convene weekly to evaluate ground-level field reports, address local grievances, and oversee targeted measures. Major policy matters will continue to go before the full cabinet, while day-to-day and immediate drought-mitigation decisions will be cleared directly by the sub-committee.
The government has already ordered comprehensive field surveys (panchnamas) to assess extensive damage to major Kharif crops—including soybean, cotton, maize, paddy, and jowar. Special emphasis is also being laid on securing drinking water grids and managing cattle fodder supplies across rural bodies for the upcoming months to protect agrarian livelihoods.
