'Top Gun 3' script already 'in bag', says director Christopher McQuarrie

Los Angeles, May 27 (UNI) Amidst the roaring success of his latest collaboration, 'Mission: Impossible: Final Reckoning', director Christopher McQuarrie has confirmed that he already has a script for 'Top Gun 3' firmly "in the bag".
The revelation came during his appearance on the 'Happy Sad Confused' podcast, posted on Monday, where he shared insights with host Josh Horowitz.
News of a third 'Top Gun' movie emerged in January 2024, with reports indicating Paramount was developing the project. Ehren Kruger was set to pen the script, and Joe Kosinski, who helmed 'Maverick', is expected to return as director, with Teller and Glen Powell also anticipated to reprise their roles.
When asked if cracking 'Top Gun 3' was proving harder than its predecessor, McQuarrie simply responded, "No, it’s already in the bag." He explained that co-writer Ehren Kruger's pitch quickly provided the framework, noting, "It wasn’t hard. I thought it would be... and we had one conversation about it and the framework is there."
The core, he added, lies in "the emotion", particularly the reconciliation between Tom Cruise's Maverick and Miles Teller’s Rooster, which resonated strongly in the last film, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The 'Top Gun' franchise soared its way to the international market with the colossal success of its second part, 'Top Gun: Maverick' in 2022, which earned more than a billion dollars and severely outperformed its 1986 predecessor.
Coming out more than three decades after the original, the sequel captivated audiences worldwide with its adrenaline-pumped aerial sequences, compelling storytelling, and a potent blend of nostalgia and fresh narrative.
Earning critical and commercial acclaim, the gigantic success of 'Maverick' quickly fuelled anticipation for another installment, though neither McQuarrie nor Tom Cruise had revealed much at the time, preferring to keep all future plans a surprise.
Christopher McQuarrie's pivotal involvement, stemming from his long-standing and successful collaboration with Tom Cruise on the 'Mission: Impossible' films, signals a continued commitment to high-quality filmmaking within the 'Top Gun' universe.
While a definitive release date for 'Top Gun 3' remains under wraps, McQuarrie's recent comments provide concrete assurance that work on the highly anticipated project is well underway.
