75-yr-old woman killed resisting theft in Gurugram; neighbours help police trap suspect

Neeraj Bali
Chandigarh, Oct 5 (UNI) A 75-year-old woman was killed after confronting a suspected thief inside her Gurugram home, while her screams alerted neighbours who blocked the intruder's escape and later helped police track him down hiding in dense vegetation at an adjoining property, police said on Monday.
The victim, identified as Madhu Sharma, lived alone in an old single-storey house in New Colony in Gurugram's Sector 7 area.
Police said the 35-year-old suspect allegedly entered the house on Sunday night intending to steal cash and valuables, apparently believing the property was locked, as there were no lights at its entrance.
But he encountered Sharma inside.
Inspector Sanjeev, Station House Officer of New Colony police station, said the suspect had already gathered some valuables and allegedly demanded Rs 100 from Sharma after coming face-to-face with her.
“She raised an alarm during which he assaulted her, resulting in her death,” Sanjeev said.
Police said Sharma resisted the alleged theft attempt, leading to a scuffle during which the suspect assaulted and shoved her. She fell to the floor.
Her screams, however, brought neighbours out of their homes.
As residents gathered around Sharma's house and alerted the police control room, the suspect found his escape route blocked, police said.
He then allegedly jumped from Sharma's property into the premises of an adjoining house and hid amid dense vegetation.
Sanjeev said the suspect remained concealed there for about two to three hours as police searched the area.
The SHO said the neighbours first told the police that the suspect was likely hiding inside.
Police eventually located and caught him.
When officers entered Sharma's house, they found her lying on the floor near the entrance to a room. Household items were scattered around the premises, which investigators said indicated that she had resisted the intruder.
She was rushed to the Civil Hospital in Sector 10A, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.
Investigators said the suspect may have targeted the ageing property after assuming it was vacant or locked. Police are also examining whether he was addicted to drugs.
Sharma had been living alone in the house for several years, police said. Investigators were trying to contact her relatives, and neighbours were also unable to provide much information about her family.
Her body was preserved at the government mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
Police said a murder case would be registered on receiving a complaint from the victim's family, after which further legal action, including the suspect's formal arrest, would be taken.
The sequence of events is being investigated, police said.
