Rain, thunderstorms to lash Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh; gusts may touch 60 kmph: IMD

Panchkula, Oct 6 (UNI) Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh are set for a spell of rain and thunderstorms from Tuesday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting lightning and gusty winds that could touch 60 kmph at isolated places in the region.
In its All India Weather Summary and Forecast Bulletin issued at 8.07 a.m. on October 6, the IMD said isolated to scattered rainfall is likely over Punjab and Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi from October 6 to 11.
The more immediate concern is thunderstorm activity. The weather department has forecast thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph, over Punjab and Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi on October 6 and 7.
The wind intensity is expected to ease subsequently, though thunderstorms accompanied by gusts of 30-40 kmph, reaching 50 kmph, are likely over the region during October 8-9.
For Tuesday, the IMD categorised thunderstorms with lightning and 40-50 kmph gusty winds as “very likely” at isolated places over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi. Similar conditions have been forecast for Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir-Ladakh and Uttarakhand.
The IMD's seven-day rainfall table indicates a gradual increase in rain coverage in parts of the northwestern plains.
Punjab is forecast to receive isolated rainfall on October 6 and 7, scattered rainfall on October 8 and 9, and isolated rainfall from October 10 to 12.
Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi is expected to see isolated rainfall from October 6 to 8, scattered rainfall on October 9 and isolated rainfall from October 10 to 12. Under the IMD's classification, isolated rainfall means precipitation at 1-25% of stations, while scattered rainfall corresponds to 26-50% of stations.
The forecast, therefore, does not indicate a continuous or widespread spell across Punjab and Haryana. Rain and thunderstorms are expected to be localised, with coverage varying from one day to another.
The weather change comes amid the presence of a Western Disturbance and other atmospheric systems.
According to the IMD's meteorological analysis, a Western Disturbance as a trough in the middle and upper tropospheric westerlies was running roughly along longitude 68°E to the north of latitude 32°N.Another trough was extending from Haryana to the North Bay of Bengal across Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining north Odisha, up to 1.5 km above mean sea level. The approaching wet spell follows above-normal temperatures in parts of the region.
As of October 5, minimum temperatures were appreciably above normal by 3.1°C to 5°C at a few places in Punjab and at isolated places in Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi. Maximum temperatures were 1.6°C to 3°C above normal at many places in Punjab, while isolated places in Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi recorded maximum temperatures 3.1°C to 5°C above normal.
The highest maximum temperature over the plains of the country was 39.7°C at Sri Ganganagar in Rajasthan. The Western Himalayan region is also expected to witness unsettled weather.
The IMD has forecast fairly widespread to widespread rainfall over Jammu and Kashmir-Ladakh on October 6 and October 9, with isolated to scattered rainfall during October 7-8 and October 10-11.
Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are likely to receive isolated to scattered rainfall throughout October 6-11.Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph, are likely at isolated places over Jammu and Kashmir-Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on October 6.

Bihar is likely to receive isolated to scattered rainfall through October 9, Jharkhand through October 10 and Odisha through October 11.
The IMD has also warned of moderate to severe lightning activity over Gangetic West Bengal during October 6-8. Northeast: Arunachal Pradesh is likely to receive isolated to scattered rain during October 6-10, while Assam-Meghalaya and Nagaland-Manipur-Mizoram-Tripura could see such rainfall through October 11.
Maharashtra, Konkan and Goa: Isolated to scattered rainfall is forecast over Konkan-Goa and Madhya Maharashtra on October 6-7, with isolated thunderstorms and lightning likely on October 6. South India: The more significant rainfall is expected across parts of southern India.

Fairly widespread to widespread rainfall is forecast over Kerala-Mahe and Lakshadweep throughout October 6-11, while Coastal Karnataka is expected to see widespread or fairly widespread rain on October 6 before rainfall coverage decreases.
