Akal Takht Jathedar seeks probe into Rajasthan Police action inside Ganganagar gurdwara

Chandigarh, Oct 5 (UNI) Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargajj on Monday condemned what he alleged was Rajasthan Police action inside a gurdwara in Sri Ganganagar, saying it had hurt Sikh religious sentiments, and called for an impartial investigation and the immediate release of an arrested local Sikh leader.
Gargajj said information received by Sikh religious authorities suggested police had entered Gurdwara Baba Deep Singh Ji and allegedly damaged property and disturbed supplies in its langar, or community kitchen.
He also alleged that posters carrying images of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and other Sikh figures had been torn during the action. Local Sikh leader Tejinderpal Singh was also arrested, according to the statement.
“This is a highly condemnable act and strict action should be taken against the police officials responsible for the incident,” Gargajj said.
The allegations made by the Jathedar could not immediately be independently verified. The Rajasthan Police version of the circumstances leading to the action and arrest was not included in the statement.
Gargajj said that even if police had a legal issue to address, they should have acted through lawful procedures while respecting the religious sanctity and established maryada, or code of conduct, of the gurdwara.
“If the police had any issue, they should have proceeded according to the 'maryada' and through legal means, instead of entering a Sikh religious place in this manner and carrying out vandalism,” he said.
The Jathedar urged the Rajasthan Chief Minister to order an impartial inquiry into Tejinderpal Singh's arrest as well as the circumstances surrounding the police action at the gurdwara. He also demanded action against any officers found responsible for wrongdoing.
“The government should immediately release Bhai Tejinderpal Singh,” Gargajj said, adding that Sikhs would not tolerate what he described as unfair treatment of Sikh leaders.
Gargajj said a Sikh delegation led by Takht Sri Damdama Sahib Jathedar Giani Tek Singh had visited Sri Ganganagar and inspected the site.
According to Gargajj, the delegation's assessment indicated that the police action had violated religious protocol.
He called on the Rajasthan government to establish the facts through an independent investigation and fix responsibility for any misconduct found during the inquiry.
