All 33 NPP legislators stand intact, says Meghalaya Deputy CM Tynsong

Shillong, Oct 8 (UNI) Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong on Thursday dismissed BJP leader Alexander Laloo Hek’s claim that several NPP legislators want to switch parties, maintaining that all 33 National People’s Party (NPP) legislators remain “united” and “intact.”
“We are united; all 33 elected MLAs of the NPP are intact. As of now, I don’t see any rift at all,” Tynsong, who is also the NPP Meghalaya State President, told reporters.

“Hek is not the state president of the NPP. I am the president of the party. Therefore, I know the reality of our party better than anybody else,” he said.
The Deputy Chief Minister said that he would have responded had the claim come from the BJP state president.
“I will not comment much on the statement made by Hek. Maybe if the BJP state president says something, then I can comment, but Hek is only a legislator,” he said.

On Wednesday, veteran BJP legislator Hek revealed that he had received phone calls from NPP and Trinamool Congress (TMC) legislators representing Assembly constituencies in Garo Hills and Jaintia Hills, all expressing their willingness to join the BJP.

Hek, however, noted that these legislators currently lack the required numbers to split from their respective political parties and merge with the BJP.

The NPP and BJP are currently alliance partners in the ruling coalitions of Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, and Manipur. Both parties are also constituents of the BJP-led North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) and the NDA at the Centre.

The NPP, which commands an absolute majority of 33 legislators—two seats above the required simple majority mark in the Assembly—leads the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) coalition, with the BJP serving as its second-largest partner.
