Traffic hit in central Delhi as barricades, heavy security deployment disrupt movement

New Delhi, Oct 8 (UNI) Traffic movement was severely affected in central Delhi on Thursday as extensive barricading and heavy deployment of Delhi Police and paramilitary personnel around Connaught Place and Rajghat disrupted normal vehicular movement, leaving commuters facing delays and diversions.
The outer circle of Connaught Place was barricaded at several points as Opposition leaders gathered in the area before proceeding towards Rajghat as part of their ongoing protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Visuals from the area showed security personnel deployed near Moets restaurant and other strategic points, while barricades restricted movement around the entire outer circle.
The security arrangements and movement of Opposition leaders in buses added to congestion on several roads in central Delhi. Opposition INDIA bloc leaders, who had gathered for a lunch meeting in Connaught Place, subsequently headed towards Rajghat for the day's protest.
The Delhi Traffic Police had issued advisories warning commuters of congestion on the Rajghat-Kishan Ghat Road and adjoining stretches in view of the proposed gathering. It had advised motorists to avoid the affected routes and use alternative roads through JLN Marg, Minto Road and Ajmeri Gate, depending on traffic conditions.
Traffic personnel were deployed at strategic locations to regulate movement and implement diversions. The restrictions were subsequently extended to buses, including DTC buses, and heavy goods vehicles at key points in the Rajghat area. The Delhi Traffic Police said the restrictions would remain in force until 10 pm on Thursday.
Under the latest traffic restrictions, vehicles at Chatta Rail were barred from moving towards NS Marg and Red Fort, while at the NS Marg-Subhash T-Point, movement towards Delhi Gate was restricted. At Shanti Van Chowk, vehicles were prohibited from moving towards Ring Road and Rajghat.
The traffic police urged motorists to follow the directions of personnel on the ground, keep intersections clear and give way to emergency vehicles.
For commuters travelling from Delhi Gate or the Delhi side towards Kashmere Gate ISBT, the traffic police suggested the JLN Marg-Minto Road-Ajmeri Gate route. From Ajmeri Gate, commuters could proceed towards New Delhi Railway Station and then take the Paharganj or Connaught Place side depending on prevailing traffic conditions.
The disruptions came on the third consecutive day of Opposition protests in the national capital over demands for Gyanesh Kumar's resignation in connection with allegations concerning the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The Election Commission and the BJP have denied the allegations raised by the Opposition.
With security arrangements continuing in central Delhi, commuters were advised to avoid unnecessary travel through Connaught Place, Rajghat, Kisan Ghat and adjoining stretches and plan their journeys accordingly.
