Asian Games Day 8: Ancy, Sarvesh lead 7-medal haul as India reach 37

New Delhi, Sep 27 (UNI) A cruel two-centimetre margin denied Ancy Sojan a shot at gold, while high jumper Sarvesh Kushare settled for silver as India added seven more medals through squash and athletics on Day 8 of the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya today.
Ancy’s 6.53 metres effort was bettered by China’s Huang Yingying, who produced a late 6.55m jump to snatch the women’s long jump gold, leaving the Indian with a second successive Asian Games silver. Sarvesh, meanwhile, cleared 2.25m to take silver in the men’s high jump event.
Anahat Singh and Abhay Singh also finished with silver in squash singles, while Tejaswin Shankar, Parul Chaudhary and Harita Bhadra added bronze medals to take India’s tally to 37, including four gold, 16 silver and 17 bronze, today.
India also assured themselves of three more boxing medals after Ankush Panghal (men’s 80kg), Parveen Hooda (women’s 65kg) and Narender Berwal (men’s 91kg) won their respective quarterfinals to reach the semifinals.
Ancy came agonisingly close to becoming only the second Indian woman after Anju Bobby George to win Asian Games long jump gold. She had taken the lead with 6.53m, but Huang produced the decisive effort in her final attempt. Shaili Singh also missed out on the podium after China’s Tan Mengyi moved past her with a 6.46m jump in the last round.
Sarvesh matched Ancy’s silver with a 2.25m clearance in the men’s high jump. Chinese Taipei’s Chao-hsuan Fu also cleared 2.25m but took gold on countback, while South Korea’s Sanghyeok Woo won bronze at 2.22m.
In the men’s decathlon, Tejaswin Shankar added a bronze to his collection with 7,934 points, becoming the only Indian to win medals at successive Asian Games in the event. Japan’s Yuma Maruyama won gold with 8,123 points and China’s Chen Xinghua took silver with 8,012. Shankar’s strongest performances came in the long jump and high jump, where he topped the standings.
Harita secured bronze in the women’s 200m after a tight finish with Japan’s Abigeirufuka Ido. She clocked 23.20 seconds, just 0.01 ahead of Ido. Indonesia’s Shanti Pereira won gold in 22.78 and China’s Yujie Chen took silver in 22.93.
Parul Chaudhary also finished third in the women’s 3000m steeplechase, setting a personal best of 9:08.67. Bahrain’s Winfred Yavi won gold in 9:04.36 and Kazakhstan’s Norah Jeruto Tanui took silver in 9:06.82.
Animesh Kujur finished fifth in the men’s 200m final in 20.80 seconds. Thailand’s Puripol Boonson won gold in 19.88, followed by China’s Huang Youwen and Japan’s Soshi Mizukubo.
Mohammed Afsal qualified for the men’s 800m final after finishing third in his heat in 1:47.37, progressing as one of the next two fastest runners. Krishan Kumar, however, failed to advance.
In squash, Anahat and Abhay had to settle for silver after losing their respective finals, missing the opportunity to secure direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where squash will make its debut.
Anahat, the 18-year-old junior world champion, went down 4-11, 4-11, 7-11 to Malaysia’s defending champion Sivasangari Subramaniam. She had earlier produced one of the tournament’s biggest comebacks, recovering from two games down to beat world No. 6 Satomi Watanabe in the semifinals.
Abhay lost 9-11, 5-11, 5-11 to Malaysia’s world No. 17 Ng Eain Yow, who successfully defended his Asian Games title. Abhay became only the second Indian man after Saurav Ghosal to win a silver medal in singles.
In boxing, Commonwealth Games champion Ankush Panghal beat Tajikistan’s Nekruz Salimov 5-0 in the men’s 80kg quarterfinals. Parveen Hooda secured at least bronze in the women’s 65kg category with a 5-0 win over Uzbekistan’s Navbakhor Khamidova, while Narender Berwal stopped Thailand’s Adthapong Saengtep in under two minutes in the 91kg quarterfinal.
Sachin Siwach’s campaign ended in the men’s 60kg quarterfinals after a 0-5 loss to Japan’s Shunsuke Kitamoto.
India’s archers continued their strong run, with both the men’s and women’s recurve teams reaching the semifinals. Dhiraj Bommadevara, Neeraj Chauhan and Yashdeep Bhogal beat China 5-1, while Kumkum Anil Mohod, Kirti Sharma and Ankita Bhakat defeated Chinese Taipei 6-0.
The compound men’s and women’s teams also advanced to the semifinals after beating Bhutan and Kazakhstan respectively. India’s compound mixed team of Chikitha Taniparthi and Sahil Jadhav also moved into the last four after defeating Mongolia and Kazakhstan. The event carries added importance with mixed compound set to make its Olympic debut at Los Angeles 2028.
In hockey, the Indian women ended their Pool stage campaign with a 7-0 win over Singapore. Sunelita Toppo scored twice as India sealed their place in the semifinals.
It turned out a disappointing outing for the badminton contingent, with PV Sindhu and Unnati Hooda losing their women’s singles quarterfinals. Sindhu went down 11-21, 21-18, 21-10 to China’s world No. 4 Chen Yufei, while Unnati lost 21-16, 14-21, 21-17 to Japan’s world No. 3 Akane Yamaguchi.
India also exited the mixed and women’s doubles events after Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto lost to China’s Huang Dongping and Feng Yan Zhe, and Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly were beaten by Malaysia’s Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan. India’s men’s team bronze remained its only badminton medal in Aichi-Nagoya.
