AP: Action plan being implemented to eradicate ganja menace: Home Minister

Vijayawada, Sep 18 (UNI) Andhra Pradesh Home Minister V Anitha has said that a lot of progress has been achieved in eradicating ganja cultivation during the last 21 months, and a one-year action plan is being implemented to complete eradication of ganja (cannabis) in the state.

At a review meeting here on Friday, the Home Minister said that the farmers who used to cultivate ganja in the combined Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam and East Godavari districts, were pursued to take up horticulture crops including Avocado and Rambutan in lieu of ganja cultivation.

The agriculture, police, revenue and horticulture department officials had striven hard to regulate and reduce ganja cultivation in the agency areas, she said, praising their role.
She called upon people to turn the ‘Break the Silence’ movement into a public movement by sensitizing people on the ill effects of ganja cultivation, sale and consumption.

The Home Minister assured that D-Addiction facility and rehabilitation to those addicted to ganja would be provided. The Home Minister appreciated the Elite Anti-Narcotics Group for Law Enforcement (EAGLE) set up especially to eradicate the ganja menace for their endeavours to curb the ganja menace.

Vanitha directed the officials to focus on illegal transportation of ganja to other states and take steps to curb it. The Home Minister informed that over 3,000 ganja related cases had been registered so far of which the accused were punished in 17 cases by the court.

EAGLE Chief and IGP A Ravikrishna said that 29,978 farmers had been provided alternative livelihood through the ‘Operation Chaitanyam’. "The police have frozen Rs 10.18 crore worth property and bank accounts in 17 NDPS cases. The EAGLE personnel sensitized over 20 lakh students on the ganja ill-effects. The EAGLE is going forward with the concept of Prevent, Detect, Enforce, Rehabilitate and Partner to achieve complete eradication of ganja in the state,” Ravikrishna explained.

The EAGLE chief made it clear it aims to disband the ganja mafia network and their transportation network to a large extent.
The AP EAGLE is exchanging information and working in coordination with Telangana, Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Odisha, he said, adding that they are using drones, GIS, Hotspot Mapping, Satellite inputs, K9 Squad and other advanced technology to identify the ganja crops and cultivation.
