AP: Anakapalli police on high alert over 'Arnab' cyclone threat

Anakapalli (Andhra Pradesh), Oct 26 (UNI) Anakapalli District Superintendent of Police Tuhin Sinha on Monday said the police and disaster response teams were on high alert in view of the approaching 'Arnab' cyclone and urged people in coastal and low-lying areas to remain vigilant and cooperate with the authorities.
In a release, he said all necessary precautions were being taken to prevent loss of life and property, and directed police personnel to coordinate with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and Fire Services for emergency rescue operations.
Police Quick Response Teams would remain on standby, while continuous patrolling would be conducted in coastal villages and low-lying areas to facilitate prompt relief and rescue operations, he said.
The SP directed district police personnel and emergency services staff to remain at their headquarters until the cyclone threat subsided, adding that leave would not be sanctioned during the period.
He also warned of legal action against those spreading false information or rumours about the cyclone through social media and other channels.
The police would coordinate with revenue officials to shift residents of vulnerable areas to safer rehabilitation centres. Authorities had been directed to ensure adequate drinking water, food and other essential facilities at the centres.
Sinha cautioned fishermen against venturing into the sea until weather conditions improved and advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel during strong winds and heavy rain.
He urged people not to stand under trees, electric poles, hoardings or weakened buildings, and warned them against touching snapped power lines or attempting to cross overflowing streams, causeways and flooded roads.
Residents were advised to keep drinking water, non-perishable food, essential medicines and flashlights ready and ensure their mobile phones were charged.
They were also asked to follow official government advisories and avoid believing unverified information.
The SP said the police department would remain available round the clock, with public safety as its priority. People can contact the police emergency helpline at 112 or 100 for assistance.
