Modi Ka Baap Row: Ashoka says Kharge, son could destroy Cong

Bengaluru, Oct 26 (UNI) Karnataka Assembly Leader of Opposition R Ashoka on Monday launched a sharp attack on Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and his son, state Minister Priyank Kharge, alleging that the father-son duo could destroy the Congress party, as BJP leaders staged a protest here demanding an apology for the senior Kharge's remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“Just two people are enough to destroy the Congress party in the country — the father and the son,” Ashoka said, targeting the two leaders during the protest at Freedom Park.
Referring to Mallikarjun Kharge and Priyank Kharge as the senior and younger Kharge, he said they would bring about the Congress party's downfall.
Ashoka also criticised the Congress president over his remarks at a function in Patna marking the 139th birth anniversary of Bihar's first Chief Minister Krishna Singh.
Responding to a heckler who shouted that Modi would not go, Kharge reportedly said, “Modi ka baap bhi jayega, baap bhi jayega” (Even Modi's father will have to go).
Demanding an apology from Kharge to the people of the country, BJP leaders raised slogans against him, climbed barricades and attempted to march towards Vidhana Soudha, the seat of power.
Police detained Ashoka, Legislative Council Opposition leader Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, former minister C N Ashwath Narayan, C P Ramamurthy and MLC N Ravikumar and took them to Upparpet police station.
Ashoka also took a swipe at Kharge over his age, saying he should devote himself to prayer and spirituality rather than making such statements. He invoked the teachings of Lord Buddha, Mahavira and Shankaracharya before accusing the Congress president of behaving as though he had lost his mental faculties.
