Women Safety Wing launches gender sensitisation programme at Hyderabad University

Hyderabad, Oct 26 (UNI) The Telangana Police Women Safety Wing on Monday launched a two-day Training of Trainers programme at the University of Hyderabad to sensitise students and other participants on gender equality and encourage them to actively challenge harassment, discrimination and gender-based violence.
The programme, organised under the #StandWithHer campaign in collaboration with the Rubaroo team and the university's Centre for Women's Studies, was inaugurated by Charu Sinha, Director General (CID, ACB and WSW), at the School of Social Sciences.
The programme will conclude on October 27.
The #StandWithHer campaign, launched in March 2026 as a year-long initiative, seeks to encourage men and boys to move beyond being passive bystanders and become active participants in preventing harassment and gender-based violence.
Addressing the gathering, Sinha said the limited response to a reporting mechanism introduced under the Women Safety Wing's Safe Mobility Initiative had prompted a deeper examination of how society normalised inappropriate behaviour.
“When we keep quiet, we are equally complicit,” she said, urging participants to question patriarchal attitudes, challenge online abuse and reflect on their own beliefs and behaviour.
She also highlighted how rigid notions of masculinity restricted emotional expression among boys and men, stressing the need to foster respect, empathy and equality to create safer spaces for women.
The training is being conducted in an interactive format, with discussions and experiential learning activities designed to encourage participants to question established social norms and reflect on everyday experiences.
The Training of Trainers model aims to equip participants to carry the campaign's message to their communities and institutions.
University of Hyderabad Vice-Chancellor J. Anuradha, Registrar Devesh Nigam, Dean of the School of Social Sciences K. Suneetha Rani, Head of the Centre for Women's Studies Deepa Srinivas and Women Safety Wing's Head of Training and Content Development Asiya Shervani attended the inaugural programme.
Suneetha Rani stressed the need to address gender inequality within homes and promote shared responsibility in everyday relationships.

“If we are trying to democratise every space around us, why not democratise home, and why are we taking it for granted?” she asked.
The Women Safety Wing aims to develop a network of trained individuals who can challenge harmful social norms and encourage intervention against harassment, making women's safety, dignity and equality a collective responsibility.
