AP: Cong pay tributes to progressive writer Gurajada Apparao on his birth anniversary

Vijayawada, Sep 21 (UNI) The Congress party leaders led by APCC Vice-president Kolanukonda Shivaji paid rich tributes to progressive writer Gurajada Apparao on his 164th birth anniversary in the party office here on Monday.

Speaking on the occasion, Shivaji said that Gurajada Apparao, through his writings, boldly exposed the social, economic and gender inequalities that existed more than a century ago and brought about significant social awareness through literature.

He recalled Gurajada Apparao’s immortal message, “A nation is not the soil but is its people,” and the message still remains relevant even today, nearly 85 years after the poet’s demise.
He said it was remarkable that Gurajada Apparao’s works continue to receive widespread public admiration and relevance.

Shivaji opined that Gurajada Apparao’s writings should be included as part of the curriculum in NCERT and CBSE schools to promote patriotism, social awareness and progressive values among the younger generation.

He further observed that writers and artists in Gurajadarao’s era were able to freely express their thoughts and ideas through literature and art, whereas today an undeclared form of censorship is prevailing.

The Congress leader alleged that writers and artists are being subjected to restrictions, arrests and bans under various laws for expressing views that are not acceptable to those in power.
He called upon poets, writers and artists to stand together against such restrictions and defend freedom of expression.

Congress leaders Golla Narayana Rao, Gumma Sambasiva Rao, Gummadi Vijay Kumar, Prabha Phanindar, Mandeppudi Sunitha, Kurshida, Gangishetti Ayyappa, Kolli Murali, Shivaram and others spoke on the occasion.
