AP: Global Horticulture Hub being established in Rayalaseema at cost of Rs 1 lakh Cr.: Minister

Vijayawada, Oct 1 (UNI) Andhra Pradesh Minister for Agriculture K Atchannaikdu has said that the government is establishing a ‘Global Horticulture Hub’ in Rayalaseema region by spending Rs One lakh crore.

Talking to the media here on Thursday, he said that the government has formulated an action to promote horticulture in Rayalaseema in the name of ‘Global Horticulture Hub- Rayalaseema Raising.

The government aims to encourage farmers to raise commercial crops instead of conventional crops, he made it clear.
The Minister explained that an Integrated Horticulture Development Plan (IHDP) was formulated for the Rayalaseema region to provide a comprehensive solution—addressing everything from water availability to market access—for the various challenges farmers face, such as limited annual rainfall, frequent drought conditions, irrigation water shortages, and a lack of market connectivity, rather than tackling these issues in isolation.

“Investments worth approximately Rs 1 lakh crore have been proposed under the IHDP for Rayalaseema region. A plan has been formulated to mobilize Rs 40,352 crore from the public sector and around Rs 60,000 crore from the private sector,” the Agriculture Minister revealed.

Asserting that proposals for government investment include Rs 20,884 crore for the irrigation sector, Rs 4,906 crore for the horticulture sector, and Rs 4,562 crore for rural road development sector, he said that the program is set to be implemented in three phases from August 2026 to July 2029, aiming to develop 201 clusters across 10 districts.

“The objectives include expanding the current horticultural area to 14.41 lakh hectares, nearly doubling production, and improving the income and living standards of approximately 9.6 lakh farmers,” he added.

Atchannaidu noted that the first phase, scheduled for 2026–27, would focus on 72 clusters with an outlay of Rs 12,066 crore, adding priority will be given to reservoirs, lift irrigation schemes, tanks, water delivery systems reaching the tail-end of the command area, and key rural roads.

The Minister explained that the plan aims to transform a total of 201 clusters into comprehensive hubs for horticulture production, processing, and marketing by developing another 67 clusters in the second phase (2027–28) at a cost of Rs 15,036 crore, and the remaining 62 clusters in the third phase (2028–29) at a cost of Rs 13,250 crore.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to take measures to secure a special place for the Rayalaseema region in the country regarding the production of high-value fruits and vegetables—such as mangoes, bananas, tomatoes, pomegranates, dates, dragon fruit, watermelons, lemons, sweet limes, and avocados.
