AP: YSRCP Doctors’ Wing demands ‘White Paper’ on quackery

Vijayawada, Oct 25 (UNI) The YSRCP NTR District Doctors’ Wing has called for the immediate release of its White Paper on unqualified medical practice in Andhra Pradesh following the reported death of an elderly woman in Anantapur after receiving an injection at a first-aid centre allegedly operated by an unqualified practitioner.

The Wing, led by Chairman Dr Ambati Naga Radhakrishna Yadav, here on Sunday the authorities to examine the effectiveness of regulatory oversight and ensure accountability wherever lapses are established. The Wing also called for a time-bound inquiry into the Anantapur incident, verification of the credentials of practitioners against whom complaints have been received, an audit of pending complaints and a written action-taken report within 15 days.

He said that a study published in 2016, based on 2001 Census data reported that 57.3 per cent of individuals identified as practising allopathic medicine in India lacked medical qualifications, adding that the finding has been disputed by the union Government and should not be interpreted as a current estimate. Nevertheless, the issue underscores the need for reliable data, effective enforcement and transparent public reporting.

“The Council should disclose the dates on which complaints were received, the steps taken in response and the reasons for any delay in enforcement, if established. An impartial inquiry would help determine whether any administrative or regulatory shortcomings occurred and whether corrective action is required,” he observed.

Dr Yadav has urged the Principal Secretary, Health Department, Andhra Pradesh, to direct the Andhra Pradesh Medical Council (APMC) to publish district-wise data from January 2025 onwards, covering complaints received, inspections conducted, unauthorised facilities identified and sealed, cases referred for criminal action, and deaths reported in suspected quackery cases.

Copies of the representation have been sent to the Secretary, National Medical Commission, New Delhi, he said, and requested the publication of its ‘White Paper’ and warned that, if a satisfactory response and concrete action are not forthcoming within 15 days, it will approach the National Medical Commission and other competent statutory authorities, he announced.
