Arab countries mediating between US and Iran remain in touch with both sides to prevent eruption of hostilities

New York, Sep 22 (UNI) Several Arab countries mediating between the US and Iran are in touch with both sides in a bid to arrange a high-level meeting on the sidelines of the ongoing UN General Assembly in New York, according to a regional source involved in the talks.
The possible meeting comes as the war approaches its seventh month, with Gulf states seeking to prevent the conflict from escalating further and revive negotiations between Washington and Tehran.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Tuesday that President Donald Trump was open to meeting Iranian representatives in New York, although no meeting had been scheduled.
“We’re open to that. I don’t think anything is scheduled at this point, but we’re certainly open to something like that, especially if it has the prospects of leading to something positive,” Rubio said.
He stressed that any talks would ultimately have to address Washington’s demand that Iran never obtain a nuclear weapon.
Trump is also expected to meet representatives of nine Arab countries to discuss the war.
Regional sources said several of those governments were expected to urge him to de-escalate and seek an agreement with Iran.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani in New York on Tuesday morning.
Qatar has played a central role in mediating between Tehran and Washington.
Reports also indicate that Iran has delivered proposals to the US through mediators aimed at reviving negotiations.
Trump used his address to the General Assembly earlier on Tuesday to repeat that he faced a “big decision” over whether to reach a deal with Iran or “annihilate the Islamic Republic”.
He again said he expected an agreement could be reached after the November US midterm elections, while insisting that electoral considerations would not affect his decisions on Iran.
“We will get it done one way or another. We will get it done and get it done fast,” Trump said. “It doesn’t make sense for Iran not to [make a deal]. They are waiting to see how I do in the midterm elections. What they don’t realise is that I am not running … I will be here for two-and-a-half years. I gave no credence and will not give credence to the election when it comes to Iran.”
