Bangladesh Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam set to become New Delhi's High Commissioner

Dhaka/New Delhi, Sep 22 (UNI) Bangladesh Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam is set to become the country's next High Commissioner to India, with the formal approval, or agrément (official approval by host nation), for his appointment now reported to have been conveyed to Dhaka.
A senior Bangladeshi official said on Tuesday that the agrément had been handed over, clearing the way for Siam to take up the posting in New Delhi. His appointment comes as Bangladesh and India seek to strengthen bilateral engagement following a prolonged period of strained relations.
Siam is currently in New York as part of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's delegation to the UN General Assembly. He is expected to take up his new responsibilities soon.
The government is also preparing to appoint Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury, Bangladesh's outgoing Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, as the next foreign secretary. The planned changes form part of a wider reshuffle of Bangladesh's senior diplomatic posts.
Siam became foreign secretary on June 20, 2025. Before taking up the position, he served as Bangladesh's ambassador to the United States, with concurrent accreditation to Guyana, and represented Bangladesh at the World Bank and International Monetary Fund.
He previously served as Bangladesh's ambassador to Nepal from November 2020 to December 2024.
Having spent over two decades in diplomacy, Siam has held several overseas postings, including at the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi, the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the UN in New York, the Consulate General of Bangladesh in New York, as well as the Bangladesh High Commission in Islamabad.
Bangladesh's current High Commissioner to India, M Riaz Hamidullah, is expected to move to Geneva next month to become Bangladesh's Permanent Representative to the UN there. Earlier reports had said Siam's appointment was awaiting India's endorsement, but the latest reporting indicates that approval has since been conveyed.
