Trump to put aside tenuous relations with China on UNGA sidelines amid Washington's preparations to host Xi Jinping

Washington, Sep 22 (UNI) Tenuous US-China relationship is likely to remain in the background of this week's UN General Assembly as US President Donald Trump prepares to host Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington later this week.
American and Chinese negotiators have been trying to repair their economic relationship after last year's tit-for-tat trade war and have also discussed opening communications over the risks posed by artificial intelligence.
China is the world's largest buyer of Russian crude oil, potentially putting Beijing in the crosshairs of a law signed by Trump last week that threatens heavy tariffs against Russia's biggest energy customers.
Trump has also dismissed Wall Street Journal reports that Chinese entities provided Iran with satellite imagery of a base in Jordan used by US troops before Iran killed three Americans there.
"I think he's behaved reasonably well, and we behave reasonably well," Trump said of Xi's conduct during the war with Iran.
Greenland is another issue hanging over the administration's relations with its allies. Two US officials told CBS News that a new US security agreement for Greenland is expected to be signed in New York.
Trump announced the agreement on Friday, saying it would strengthen the US military presence on the semi-autonomous Danish territory. He has repeatedly argued that the US needs to acquire Greenland for its security interests, although Denmark and Greenland have consistently rejected the idea.
Disputes over Greenland, trade, defence spending and Trump's push for NATO members to support the US in the Iran war have repeatedly brought Washington into conflict with Canada and European countries over the past year.
At last year's UN General Assembly, Trump openly criticised European allies over immigration and other disputes.
"Your countries are going to hell," he said during his address, while also questioning the role of the UN.
"What is the purpose of the United Nations?" he asked.
Trump's movements around the UN are expected to receive less media coverage this year after the White House barred Politico, CNN and MS NOW from its premises.
The presidential network pool, made up of ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox and NBC, subsequently suspended coverage of the president. As a result, television coverage of Trump's meetings with foreign leaders is expected to be limited.
Politico, CNN and MS NOW have announced plans to sue the Trump administration, arguing that the restrictions violate their First Amendment rights and seeking to restore their access.
