Bengal: ACB arrests Ultadanga Traffic Guard Home Guard for alleged bribery

Kolkata, Oct 14 (UNI) The Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) of the West Bengal Police arrested a home guard attached to the Ultadanga Traffic Guard on Monday night for allegedly accepting bribes from truck drivers to allow them to enter roads restricted to heavy vehicles, police sources said.
According to sources, freight trucks could gain access to Kolkata, Howrah and other towns across the state by paying a syndicate around Rs 2,500, bypassing no-entry restrictions.
Multiple complaints had been lodged over the alleged racket. Following an investigation, the home guard was questioned but allegedly failed to cooperate with the investigators, leading to his arrest, police sources said.
Investigators suspect the involvement of a larger network and are working to identify others connected with the operation.
The ACB had recently uncovered the alleged multi-crore corruption racket. Following the launch of the investigation, a key syndicate member, Sanjeev, was arrested in Howrah on Thursday.
During interrogation, ACB detectives reportedly found that the syndicate’s leaders maintained links with certain government officials. Sanjeev allegedly collected money from truck drivers in exchange for special cards, which enabled the vehicles to pass through designated traffic guards in Howrah, Kolkata and Baruipur during restricted hours.
The syndicate’s leaders allegedly made regular payments to traffic guard personnel to facilitate the illegal movement of trucks.
An ACB official said the alleged corruption network had been operating across South Bengal for 12 years, since 2014. The agency is now working to identify police officers suspected of being involved in the racket and may summon them for questioning.
Investigators suspect that the home guard was arrested in connection with the same case.
