Meghalaya: HC grants time to advocates facing contempt over call to oust Advocate General

Shillong, Oct 13 (UNI) A Division Bench of the Meghalaya High Court today granted additional time to 19 advocates facing criminal contempt proceedings to file individual affidavits tendering an unconditional apology for calling an indefinite statewide judicial abstention.
The Bench, comprising Chief Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew, was hearing a suo motu criminal contempt petition registered by the Registrar General of the High Court over the indefinite statewide judicial abstention called by Meghalaya High Court Bar Association and Shillong Bar Association.
On October 8, the High Court initiated suo motu criminal contempt proceedings after the two Bar Associations passed a resolution on September 30, calling on lawyers across Meghalaya to abstain from judicial work from October 1 until Advocate General Amit Kumar is removed from office.
The Court had issued notice to 19 advocates under Section 15 of the Contempt of Courts Act, 1971 read with Article 215 of the Constitution of India.
During Tuesday's hearing, all the advocates were personally present except advocates at serial numbers 13 and 15(vi).
“They (advocates) sought time to file respective affidavits tendering unconditional apology and assuring not to repeat the same,” the court noted in its order.
The court granted time for the advocates and listed the matter for further hearing on October 14. UNI RRK SS
