Meitei Alliance condemns killings & attacks in Manipur

Imphal, Oct 13 (UNI) The Meitei Alliance today strongly condemned the continuing terrorist attacks, brutal killings of innocent civilians and destruction of homes and livelihoods in the hill districts of Manipur, particularly in the Liangmai and Tangkhul Naga areas, including reported cross-border attacks by heavily armed militants of the Myanmar-based Kuki National Army–Burma (KNA-B).
In a statement here, the Meitei Alliance said the recent killings in Kamjong, Kangpokpi and Ukhrul districts, particularly the reported beheading of Naga civilian Ajinbou Ringkangmai, whose severed head remains unaccounted for, represented an appalling act of barbarity and an assault on the foundations of human civilisation.
The Alliance stated that murdering an innocent person was an atrocity, while mutilating the body and denying the grieving family the dignity of performing the last rites amounted to an act of unimaginable cruelty. It demanded the immediate recovery of his remains and the identification, arrest and prosecution of every person involved in the crime.
The Meitei Alliance expressed concern that nearly three and a half years after violence erupted in Manipur on May 3, 2023, innocent people continued to be killed by heavily armed militants, villages were being attacked and families were living under constant fear and insecurity.
Questioning the continued attacks despite the overwhelming presence of Central and State security forces, the Alliance asked how such atrocities could persist and how many more innocent lives would have to be sacrificed before those entrusted with protecting the people fulfilled their responsibilities.
Meanwhile, the Alliance highlighted the plight of tens of thousands of internally displaced persons (IDPs), who continue to live in overcrowded relief camps under undignified and often inhumane conditions, deprived of their homes, livelihoods and certainty about their future.
It stated that children were growing up in displacement, families were losing hope, and an entire generation was being made to bear the consequences of prolonged violence and what it described as governmental failure.
It criticised the ruling and opposition political parties and their supporters for appearing increasingly preoccupied with the forthcoming Assembly elections, political calculations and narrow electoral interests, while innocent people continued to lose their lives and displaced families struggled to survive.
The Alliance questioned whether the suffering of the people, the restoration of peace and the rehabilitation of displaced families had become secondary to the pursuit of political power.
The Meitei Alliance called upon the Government of India, the Government of Manipur and all security agencies to immediately address what it described as the continuing failure of civilian protection. It demanded that those responsible for the killings, including any armed groups operating from across the international border, be apprehended and brought to justice.
It further urged the authorities to prevent further attacks, investigate security failures, ensure the protection of vulnerable communities and prioritise the safe and dignified return of all displaced persons to their original homes.
The Alliance also appealed to all political parties, elected representatives and aspiring leaders to rise above electoral calculations and place the lives, dignity and future of the people of Manipur above political ambitions.
Raising questions about the purpose of political power and elections amid the continuing crisis, the statement asked, “What is the meaning of political power when innocent citizens cannot live safely in their own homes? What is the purpose of elections if the fundamental suffering of the people is forgotten?”
The Meitei Alliance said that rather than endlessly questioning and blaming others, society must examine its own collective conscience and, above all, hold accountable those entrusted with the responsibility of protecting Manipur and its people.
“Manipur does not need another round of political promises while its people are being killed and displaced. It needs immediate action, accountability, justice and lasting peace,” it added.
