Bengal: Civic volunteer arrested over alleged harassment of Mamata Banerjee granted bail

Kolkata, Oct 14 (UNI) Anusua Saha, a civic volunteer arrested for allegedly harassing former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee outside her Kalighat residence, was granted bail after being produced before the Alipore Court on Wednesday.
Kolkata Police Deputy Commissioner (South) Rahul De said the investigation was under way to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
"We are investigating the reason behind the civic volunteer's visit to Kalighat and the events that transpired outside the former Chief Minister's residence," he said.
According to Lalbazar sources, investigators are also examining the reasons behind Saha's prolonged absence from work.
The incident allegedly occurred around 6 pm on Tuesday outside Banerjee's residence in Kalighat, south Kolkata. In her police complaint, Trinamool Congress MP Dola Sen alleged that Saha attempted to attack Banerjee while carrying a sharp knife.
Sen also claimed that Saha identified herself as a civic volunteer and verbally abused the former Chief Minister. She further alleged that the accused was a drug addict, a claim that remains to be verified through investigation.
Investigators are examining Saha's identity, employment records, movements before and after the incident, and other aspects of the complaint to establish the sequence of events.
Saha was initially remanded to police custody for three days after being produced before the Alipore Court on Wednesday. She was subsequently granted bail.
The investigation is expected to examine the motive behind her visit to Kalighat, the allegation involving a sharp weapon, her conduct at the time of the incident and her prolonged absence from work.
Questions have also been raised about security arrangements outside the former Chief Minister's residence.
Investigators may examine the role of security personnel, surveillance measures and the circumstances prevailing outside the residence at the time of the incident.
