Governor, Deputy CM call for collective efforts to protect Manipur’s wildlife & biodiversity

Imphal, Oct 14 (UNI) Governor of Manipur Ajay Kumar Bhalla and Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho on Wednesday called for collective efforts by the government, local communities, educational institutions and other stakeholders to protect the state’s wildlife, biodiversity and natural habitats.
They were speaking at the grand finale of the 72nd Wildlife Week Celebration, 2026, organised by the Forest Department, Government of Manipur, at the City Convention Centre in Palace Compound, Imphal, under the theme “Connecting Habitat, Thriving Wildlife”.
Addressing the gathering, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla highlighted Manipur’s rich natural heritage, characterised by its hills, lush forests, wetlands and extraordinary biodiversity.
He noted that these natural landscapes sustain numerous forms of life, including endangered and endemic species found only in specific regions.
“Our forest and wildlife are not obstacles to progress. They are essential to ecological security, climate resilience, water conservation, and sustainable livelihoods,” he said.
The Governor emphasised that protecting the state’s natural heritage was not solely the responsibility of the government but a shared responsibility of all citizens.
Referring to endangered and threatened species such as the Sangai deer, clouded leopard, Himalayan black bear, pangolin and Nongin, he stressed the need for greater public awareness and concerted efforts to safeguard wildlife.
He also underscored the ecological importance of resident and migratory birds, particularly the Amur falcon, whose annual migration highlights Manipur’s significant role in protecting migratory birds and their habitats.
Stressing that species conservation must go hand in hand with habitat protection, Bhalla called for measures to prevent illegal hunting, wildlife trafficking and smuggling.
He also emphasised scientific research, wildlife monitoring, wetland restoration, protection of forest corridors and greater understanding of lesser-known species.
The Governor urged people from all sections of society to work together to preserve Manipur’s wildlife and rich biodiversity.
Speaking at the programme, Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho described Manipur’s forests, wetlands and diverse ecosystems as valuable natural assets.
He said the Sangai of Keibul Lamjao National Park, the Nongin and the state’s rich variety of resident and migratory birds formed an irreplaceable part of its ecological and cultural heritage.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to wildlife protection through effective governance, scientific management and public participation, with particular emphasis on safeguarding critical habitats, preventing poaching, curbing illegal wildlife trade, restoring degraded ecosystems and strengthening the monitoring of threatened species.
Dikho stressed that conservation efforts required stronger enforcement, effective field surveillance and active participation of local communities to promote peaceful coexistence between people and wildlife.
He also called for renewed emphasis on animal welfare, scientific management, conservation education and modern professional standards.
Appreciating the efforts of the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) and Head of Forest Force, forest officers and frontline personnel, he urged educational institutions, young citizens, local communities, experts and concerned agencies to join hands with the government in safeguarding Manipur’s biodiversity for future generations.
The Governor and the Deputy Chief Minister also congratulated Manipur Zoological Garden on the occasion of its Golden Jubilee.
The programme featured the release of a video album on wildlife conservation and the presentation of a report on the 72nd Wildlife Week Celebration, 2026. Rescued wild animals were released into their natural habitats, while high-impact public service announcement (PSA) reels on the theme “Wildlife Conservation—Our Shared Responsibility” were also released.
Two books, titled Birds of Langol Reserve Forest, a Reckoner and Mahoushagi Maithong, were released during the event.
The occasion also witnessed the launch of two new initiatives, the Manipur Clouded Leopard Conservation Project and the Vulture Conservation Project. Prizes and awards were distributed across various categories as part of the celebration.
