Bengal: Two killed as former TMC MLA Sukumar Mahato's SUV hits toto in Sandeshkhali

Kolkata, Oct 14 (UNI) Two people were killed and another was seriously injured when an SUV allegedly belonging to former Trinamool Congress MLA from Sandeshkhali, Sukumar Mahato, collided head-on with a toto carrying passengers at Boyarmari in West Bengali's North 24 Parganas district.
The accident occurred when the SUV reportedly lost control and plunged into a roadside pond along with the toto.
Mahato was not inside the vehicle at the time of the accident. The driver, who had recently been appointed, has reportedly been absconding since the incident.
According to local sources, the driver was travelling to Kolkata in the SUV to bring Mahato back. Meanwhile, a toto carrying passengers was proceeding towards Sandeshkhali from the Malancha side. When the vehicles reached Boyarmari, the SUV allegedly lost control and rammed into the toto before both vehicles plunged into a roadside pond.
Several toto passengers sustained serious injuries in the collision. Local residents rushed to the spot and rescued the injured before taking them to Minakhan Hospital. On reaching the hospital, doctors declared the toto driver and a woman dead. The deceased were identified as Mujibur Rahaman, 47, and Mahima Bibi, 50. Another injured person is undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Police from Nazat police station reached the accident site after receiving information and initiated an investigation into the incident. The whereabouts of the absconding driver remain unknown.
Recounting the incident, eyewitness Mizanur Molla said, "We were standing beside the pond when we suddenly heard a loud crash. We saw the black SUV hit the toto and plunge straight into the pond. We shouted for help and gathered people. We entered the pond and moved the SUV to pull the toto out from underneath it. A woman was trapped inside, and it took us considerable time to rescue her."
BJP MLA from Sandeshkhali, Sanat Sardar, also visited the accident site and assured the affected families of his support.
He urged Mahato to stand by the families of those killed and extend assistance to the injured.
Reacting to the incident, Mahato said he had been unable to contact the driver and did not know where he was.
"Whether I was inside the vehicle or not, two people have lost their lives after being hit by my car. I will stand by both families and provide all possible assistance. I will also support those who have been injured," the former MLA said.
Police are investigating the circumstances leading to the collision.
