Bengal Forest minister warns of strict action against illegal tree felling

Siliguri, Oct 13 (UNI) West Bengal Forest Minister Manoj Kumar Oraon on Tuesday warned of strict action against those involved in illegal felling of trees in tea gardens and forest areas, saying that the manager of Dima Tea Estate would face legal action for the alleged offence.
“If the manager has committed an offence by illegally felling trees, he must go to jail,” the minister said, adding that the government would not tolerate such violations.
According to the minister, the department received information about the alleged illegal felling on Monday and directed officials to initiate an inquiry. Subsequent inspections reportedly detected violations, following which the department detained the tea estate manager, Abhijit Raha, for questioning. The investigation is under way.
The minister said permission for felling trees had been granted only up to June 15. Although there might have been an extension, the department was examining the matter seriously to establish whether the felling had continued beyond the permitted period.
He said the department had also received reports of tree felling in seven divisions, including Rydak and Kumargram, and officials had been instructed to investigate the allegations thoroughly.
“The new government has decided to deal firmly with such offences. We will not tolerate illegal tree felling, poaching in forest areas or unauthorised entry into forests,” Oraon said.
He added that the Forest Department had identified some alleged offenders operating in forest areas and would take stringent action against those found involved in illegal activities.
The minister said the government and the department would maintain strict vigilance to prevent the destruction of forest resources and ensure that those responsible for violations were brought to justice.
