Imphal, Oct 13 (UNI) A team of officials from KfW Development Bank and the Community-based Sustainable Forest Management for Water Resources Conservation in Manipur (COSFOM) project met Deputy Chief Minister and Forest, Environment and Climate Change Minister Losii Dikho at his office in the Civil Secretariat, Mantripukhri, today.
During the meeting, the team briefed the Deputy Chief Minister on the progress and objectives of the COSFOM project, a Government of India initiative supported by the German Development Bank, KfW, under the Indo-German Programme on Climate Change Adaptation.
The project is implemented by the Manipur Forest Department and managed by the Community Forestry and Water Conservation Society-Manipur.
Nina Jantos, Portfolio Manager for Natural Resources and Climate, East and Southeast Asia, KfW Development Bank, highlighted the project’s ecological impact and progress despite challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing conflict in Manipur.
She said the project aims to restore 21,800 hectares of degraded forests, strengthen upper watersheds and improve the livelihoods of local communities. She emphasised that the initiative seeks to address ecological degradation while supporting forest-dependent populations.
Jantos also sought the Deputy Chief Minister’s support to ensure the smooth implementation and continuation of the project.
Losii Dikho acknowledged the objectives and potential impact of the COSFOM project, recognising its contribution to ecological conservation and community development.
He appreciated KfW Development Bank’s efforts to strengthen income-generating activities, community infrastructure and self-help groups, and assured the team of the State Government’s support and necessary assistance for effective implementation.
