Bengal: Grandfather arrested for allegedly drowning 18-month-old grandson in Purulia

Purulia, Oct 11 (UNI) Police have arrested a man, Rajen Pramanik, for allegedly murdering his 18-month-old grandson by throwing him into a well in the Baghmundi police station area of Purulia district on Sunday.
Investigators are probing a possible sorcery angle, including the suspicion that the child may have been killed as part of an occult ritual.
The incident came to light a few days ago when the toddler's body was recovered from a well near his residence.
The circumstances surrounding the child's death triggered tension in the locality, with suspicions initially falling on a young neighbour.
The child's mother lodged a complaint with the police, accusing the neighbour of the murder over a long-standing personal dispute.
Police initially detained the youth for questioning but reportedly found no evidence linking him to the crime.
The investigation subsequently turned towards the child's grandfather.
According to police sources, a sniffer dog deployed at the crime scene led investigators towards Pramanik, who was questioned.
Police decided to arrest him after allegedly finding inconsistencies in his statements.
Investigators suspect that Pramanik lifted the sleeping toddler from his bed and threw him into the well, causing his death by drowning.
The probe has also brought to light reports of previous mysterious child deaths in the family and alleged occult practices in the household.
Police suspect that the murder could be linked to a human sacrifice ritual, though the motive has not yet been conclusively established.
Pramanik is being interrogated to ascertain the circumstances and motive behind the alleged murder.
Police are also examining whether any other family members or outsiders were involved in the crime.
The alleged sorcery connection remains a line of investigation, and the circumstances surrounding the child's death are yet to be fully established.
