Bengal: National Commission for Women seeks swift action in Purulia nursing trainee murder

Purulia, Sep 16 (UNI) The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognisance of the murder of 19-year-old nursing trainee Pritika Mahato in Purulia and sought stringent action against those responsible.
NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has written to West Bengal Director General of Police Siddhinath Gupta, seeking a comprehensive investigation, recovery of the murder weapon and invocation of all applicable provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The Commission has also directed the police to thoroughly collect and preserve forensic evidence from the crime scene.
It has sought protection, legal assistance and counselling for the victim's family and asked the West Bengal Police to submit a detailed ‘Action Taken Report’ within seven days.
Meanwhile, Balrampur and Tamna police, accompanied by forensic experts, reconstructed the crime scene at a mess house in Purulia with the prime accused, Amit Kumar Mahato.
Senior district police officers and forensic personnel collected evidence and samples from the room, which has since been sealed.
According to police sources, Mahato, 23, was arrested during a late-night nakabandi in Baghmundi while allegedly transporting Pritika's body on his motorcycle.
A village police jawan intercepted him while he was reportedly heading towards the Ayodhya Hills.
Police became suspicious after noticing blood stains on the motorcycle and the plastic sack he was carrying.
Police said the accused allegedly confessed to slitting Pritika's throat following an argument during a phone call.
He had reportedly called her to his mess room earlier in the day, where the murder allegedly took place.
Investigators said Mahato waited for nearly eight hours before attempting to dispose of the body.
He allegedly cleaned the room, bought a sack and rope from a local market and refuelled his motorcycle before setting out under the cover of darkness.
Police suspect he planned to throw the body from a hilltop into a waterfall in the Ayodhya Hills to destroy evidence.
Local BJP leader Rakesh has demanded exemplary punishment for the accused.
