Bhutan seeks Kerala’s ‘Operation Toofan’ model to combat drug menace: Chennithala

Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 21 (UNI) Bhutan has approached Kerala seeking details of the state’s ‘Operation Toofan – The Narco Hunt’, launched as part of the fight against the growing drug menace, Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala said today.
Chennithala said Bhutan Home Minister Lungten Dorji telephoned him recently, congratulated Kerala on the initiative and sought details of the campaign.
Dorji had learnt about Operation Toofan through media reports and informed Chennithala that the Bhutanese government was also interested in implementing a similar initiative in the country amid the growing threat posed by narcotic drugs.
Chennithala said he invited the Bhutanese Home Minister to Kerala and offered to hold discussions on the functioning of Operation Toofan and share the necessary information required for implementing the programme.
He described Bhutan’s interest in the Kerala initiative as a significant achievement, saying that a programme implemented by Kerala had crossed national borders and was emerging as a possible model for other countries in the fight against drugs.
“The fact that an initiative implemented by Kerala is crossing national borders and becoming a guiding force for other countries is a matter of pride for Kerala, especially for Operation Toofan,” Chennithala said.
The Home Minister’s remarks come amid intensified anti-drug enforcement activities in Kerala under Operation Toofan, with the state government seeking to combine enforcement measures with public participation and awareness programmes to tackle drug abuse.
