Bihar: Baby born in train on Maha Ashtami, gets free pass till adulthood

Buxar, Oct 18 (UNI) The joyous cries of a newborn filled the S-2 coach of the Ahmedabad–Barauni Express on the auspicious occasion of Maha Ashtami on Sunday, as a railway doctor and his team successfully delivered a baby aboard the moving train’s journey through Bihar.
The heartwarming incident unfolded at Buxar railway station, where swift coordination between railway officials and medical personnel ensured the safe delivery of a healthy baby. Both the mother and the newborn received immediate medical attention following the delivery.
Adding a special touch to the extraordinary event, the newborn will be eligible for a complimentary railway travel pass until attaining adulthood, in accordance with railway rules, railway doctor Dr Hariom Pathak said.
The incident occurred aboard train number 19483, the Ahmedabad–Barauni Express, which was carrying a couple travelling from Surat to their native village for the Dussehra festivities. The husband, who works at a textile factory in Surat, was travelling with his 25-year-old pregnant wife in coach S-2. Shortly after the train departed from DDU station, the woman began experiencing labour pains, prompting an urgent request for medical assistance.
On receiving the information, Buxar Station Manager Rajat Saxena immediately arranged for medical support to meet the train at the station. The doctor and medical team rushed to the coach when the train arrived at Buxar at around 11 am, Dr Hariom Pathak from the railway hospital reached the designated coach with his medical team. With little time to spare, the team attended to the woman and successfully conducted the delivery inside the train compartment. The arrival of the newborn brought a moment of joy amid the tense circumstances.
The baby was born healthy, and the medical team provided initial medical care to both the mother and the child.
After the delivery, Dr Pathak advised the couple to get down at Buxar station so that the mother and newborn could receive further treatment, proper care, and medical observation. However, the couple expressed their wish to continue travelling to their village home. After providing the necessary medical assistance and advice, the railway team allowed the train to resume its journey. The train remained at Buxar station for approximately 30 minutes.
Dr Pathak said railway rules provide for a travel pass for a child born aboard a train, allowing the child to travel free of charge until attaining adulthood.
The birth on Maha Ashtami turned an otherwise routine train journey into an unforgettable experience for the family. The incident also highlighted the importance of timely medical assistance and coordination among railway officials during emergencies.
