Bihar CM reviews flood situation, seeks early damage assessment report

Patna, Oct 6 (UNI) Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary on Tuesday reviewed the flood situation and damage caused by the floods and directed officials to submit a detailed assessment report at the earliest.
The review meeting, held at the Sankalp auditorium at the Lok Sevak residence, was attended by BJP national president and MP Nitin Nabin.
Water Resources Department Secretary Chandrashekhar Singh briefed the meeting on the two phases of flooding in the state.
He said new highest water levels were recorded in the Ganga, Sone, Ghaghra, Kosi and Punpun rivers during the first phase, while heavy rainfall in the second phase led to record water levels at four locations along the Gandak. Embankments were damaged at six locations in West Champaran, Gopalganj and Saran districts, officials said.
Choudhary said the unusually high discharge in the Ganga, Gandak and Sone rivers had contributed to the severity of the floods.
He also identified silt accumulation in riverbeds as a major factor behind flooding and noted that Bihar was the first state in the country to formulate a silt policy.
The Chief Minister directed the Disaster Management Department to coordinate with all concerned departments to assess the flood damage and the estimated cost of restoration and submit the report promptly.
He also ordered continuous monitoring of river conditions and flood damage and called for necessary arrangements to address problems likely to arise after water recedes from affected areas.
The Chief Minister said ex-gratia assistance would be distributed among families affected during the second phase of flooding on October 12.
Deputy Chief Ministers Vijay Kumar Choudhary and Bijendra Prasad Yadav, Disaster Management Minister Ratnesh Sada and senior officials were also present at the meeting.
