Bihar: Mokama MLA Anant Singh's MLC poll rebellion triggers tension in JD(U)

Patna, Oct 1 (UNI) A rebellion by Mokama MLA Anant Singh against his own party's candidate in the Bihar MLC elections has triggered a political showdown within the Janata Dal (United), with the JD(U) legislator openly backing a rival candidate from Prashant Kishor's Jan Suraaj Party.
Singh is opposing JD(U) candidate and sitting MLC Neeraj Kumar in the Patna Graduates' constituency and has extended his support to Anuj Singh, the Jan Suraaj Party candidate from the same seat. When Anuj Singh filed his nomination on Thursday, Anant Singh also held a roadshow for him in Patna, further intensifying the political tension.
The party is engaged in high-level deliberations over the Anant Singh issue. JD(U) President Nitish Kumar held a meeting with the party's Working President Sanjay Jha on the matter on Thursday.
Sanjay Jha and Deputy CM Bijendra Yadav, who emerged from the meeting with Nitish Kumar, declined to speak to the media.
JD(U)'s other senior leaders have also avoided speaking publicly about the dispute. When journalists questioned Minister Ashok Choudhary on Thursday, he said the party would give an appropriate response at the right time. Minister Madan Sahni also evaded questions related to Anant Singh's rebellion.
Anant Singh has maintained that his loyalty to Nitish Kumar remains intact. He argues that MLC elections are not party elections and are not contested on a party symbol. Therefore, he maintains that he is not acting against the party.
The nomination process is underway for elections to eight Bihar Legislative Council (MLC) seats. Voting will take place on 23 September, and the results will be announced on 27 October.
Within the ruling NDA alliance, the JD(U) and BJP are contesting four seats each. Prashant Kishor's Jan Suraaj Party has announced candidates for all eight seats. On the opposition side, the RJD has fielded candidates for six seats. Independents, Congress, and Left party leaders are also contesting the remaining seats.
