BIS seizes 95 gold ornaments weighing 467 grams in Amritsar over hallmarking violations

Chandigarh, Oct 22 (UNI) The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has seized 95 gold ornaments weighing 467.44 grams from a registered jewellery establishment in Punjab's Amritsar district after detecting alleged violations of mandatory hallmarking requirements, officials said on Thursday.
The enforcement operation was carried out by the BIS Jammu and Kashmir Branch Office at a jewellery establishment in Pratap Bazaar, Chheharta, following information about suspected violations of hallmarking regulations.
According to an official statement, BIS inspectors examined gold ornaments displayed and available for sale and found 91 pieces weighing 447.11 grams carrying incomplete or non-prescribed hallmarking.
Another four ornaments weighing 20.33 grams were found without the prescribed BIS hallmark.
Officials said some ornaments carried the BIS logo or purity markings such as "916" but lacked the mandatory six-character Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) number or other prescribed hallmarking details.
The bureau cautioned consumers against assuming that jewellery bearing a BIS logo or purity marking necessarily meets the prescribed standards.
"Consumers should not treat jewellery as validly BIS-hallmarked merely because it carries the BIS logo or purity markings such as 916, 22K916 or 18K750," BIS said in its advisory.
It urged buyers to verify the complete hallmark and authenticate the HUID through the "Verify HUID" feature of the BIS CARE mobile application before purchasing gold jewellery.
The seized ornaments were formally inventoried and sealed under Section 28 of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016.
BIS said the evidence was being examined and further action would be taken under the applicable provisions of the BIS Act, rules, regulations and hallmarking orders.
The bureau emphasised that registration of a jewellery establishment with BIS does not automatically guarantee that every ornament offered for sale complies with mandatory hallmarking requirements.
"Registered jewellers are responsible for ensuring that gold jewellery and artefacts offered for sale conform to the prescribed hallmarking requirements," the statement said.
Consumers were advised to check the hallmark on each ornament individually, irrespective of whether the seller was registered with BIS.
The bureau also sought information about the sale of non-hallmarked jewellery, incomplete hallmarking or suspected misuse of BIS marks.
Complaints can be submitted through the BIS CARE application or emailed to [email protected] and [email protected]. Information may also be provided to the BIS Jammu and Kashmir Branch Office at Bari Brahmana, Jammu.
BIS assured that the identity of informants would remain confidential.
