BJD attacks Odisha govt over unfulfilled promises

Bhubaneswar, Sep 17 (UNI) The opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Thursday accused the BJP government in Odisha of failing to deliver on its "double engine, double development" promise, alleging that the state has witnessed a decline in development, rising prices, unemployment and distress migration during its nearly two-and-a-half years in office.
In a statement, BJD spokesperson and media coordinator Dr Lenin Mohanty cited a decline in central grants, deterioration in law and order, a rise in crimes against women, alleged illegal mining, slow government spending and other issues to target the state government.
Mohanty claimed that central grants to Odisha declined by 18.19 per cent in 2024-25, while Andhra Pradesh and Bihar received special packages from the Centre.
He also alleged that the state government had spent only 28 per cent of the Rs 3.1 lakh crore allocated in the current budget by the end of August.
On employment, Mohanty said the BJP had promised to fill 1.5 lakh vacant government posts within five years, including 65,000 in the first two years.
The government has claimed to have made 45,000 appointments, but advertisements for 39,000 of these posts were issued during the previous BJD regime, he said.
"Therefore, it would not be an exaggeration to say that the BJP has filled only around 6,000 posts in two-and-a-half years," he said.
Mohanty alleged that reports of distress migration from several districts continued despite the BJP's promise to address the issue.
He also claimed that illegal mining and sand mining had increased and that Odisha's inflation rate had remained above the national average, pushing up prices of essential commodities.
He cited letters written by three BJP MPs to the Chief Minister expressing concern over the slow progress of development works.
Mohanty also criticised amendments to the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, alleging that Odisha stood to lose more than Rs 1 lakh crore in mining-tax arrears and around Rs 12,000 crore annually in revenue.
He alleged that 20 BJP MPs from Odisha in the Lok Sabha and five in the Rajya Sabha had supported the amendment, and accused the party of now claiming that the state would not suffer losses.
