A see-saw battle of ballots in UP MLC counting

Lucknow, Oct 27 (UNI) A see-saw battle of ballots is being witnessed in the counting for the 11 teacher and graduate MLC seats in Uttar Pradesh.
Though officially the counting commenced at 0800 hrs on Tuesday, it took around six hours to make the bundle of the ballot papers.
However, allegations and counter allegations between the BJP and SP candidates have further delayed the process.
In several seats not even the first round of counting was completed by 6 pm.
According to initial reports, in the Varanasi teacher seat, 1,000 votes were counted at 14 tables in the first round.
SP candidate and outgoing MLC Lal Bihari Yadav is leading in the first round. BJP's Pramod Mishra is in second place.
In Varanadi graduate seat, SP candidate Ashutosh Sinha is also leading by a slender margin after the first round.
In Agra, SP's teacher candidate, Dr. Akash Agarwal, is leading by 1,050 votes in the first round. He received 5,451 votes, while BJP candidate Harikishore Tiwari received 4,462 votes.
However, later the counting of votes in Agra was halted due to 1,000 suspicious votes.
In the first round of counting of votes for the Bareilly-Moradabad division the teacher MLC election has been completed. BJP candidate Dr. Hari Singh Dhillon is leading, while SP candidate Haji Danish Akhtar is trailing.
Independent candidate Rajiv Yadav is leading in the Gorakhpur-Faizabad Block Teachers' Constituency, with the BJP and Samajwadi Party candidates trailing behind him.
BJP's Shrichand Sharma has taken the lead in the first round of counting in Meerut teachers constituency.
The counting process in the Lucknow teachers and graduate, in Allahabad- Jhansi and other places were in progress at a snail pace.
Meanwhile, SP President Akhilesh Yadav has asked Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar to take immediate cognizance to speed up the counting and make the results transparent.
He alleged that the UP MLC vote count is being deliberately delayed.
Votes are being counted slowly, and the Election Commission is not officially announcing the results of each round.
No information is being shared with either political parties or the media, he charged.
Yadav further said ,"The Election Commission should not make a mockery of democracy. SP workers and officials are closely monitoring the vote count. All workers will remain vigilant until the victory certificate is received. If the District Magistrate and Commissioner attempt any kind of dishonesty, we will protest against them and file a lawsuit."
A total of 152 candidates are contesting the elections in five graduate and six teacher constituencies.
The election was conducted using ballot papers and the final results are expected by tomorrow noon.
