BJP to finalise candidate panels by November-end for UP Assembly polls

Lucknow, Sep 27 (UNI) The ruling BJP has stepped up preparations for the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, with the party working to finalise panels of prospective candidates for all seats by the end of November, amid concerns over anti-incumbency and resentment against several sitting MLAs.
A major concern for the party is reportedly the resentment against a large number of its MLAs. To address this, the BJP is conducting surveys across the seats it currently holds and is preparing candidate panels for constituencies where there is strong dissatisfaction with the sitting legislators.
There are indications that around 40 per cent of the BJP's sitting MLAs could be denied tickets this time, with the party considering greater representation for younger candidates, including those from the Gen Z generation. There is also a proposal to field young candidates from the families of senior party leaders.
The party plans to prepare panels of prospective candidates for all seats by mid-November, following which its election strategy, including finalisation of candidates, is expected to be worked out in December.As part of the exercise, the party has prioritised the Braj region and eastern Uttar Pradesh.
The BJP performed relatively poorly in these regions in the Lok Sabha elections and also won fewer Assembly seats in the 2022 elections than it had in 2017.
Surveys covering more than 140 seats currently held by the party in the two regions are nearing completion. Candidate panels have been prepared for around 80 constituencies where there is reported resentment against the sitting MLAs.
The panels have been prepared after consultations with local party workers and office-bearers at the block, tehsil and district levels, sources said.
The BJP is also conducting surveys in constituencies held by its allies. The party wants to assess the position of its allies ahead of the Assembly polls and determine whether seat adjustments or swaps may be required. It may also assist its allies in the selection of candidates, sources said.
A senior BJP leader said the primary criterion for awarding tickets this time would be the candidate's prospects of winning the election.
“The number of times a candidate has won or the stature of the candidate within the party will not be the criterion this time,” the leader said.

The leader further said that surveys were being conducted by different agencies to cross check its authenticity. Most of these surveys were being monitored by the central leadership and these agencies are also reporting directly to them.
