BJP to mobilise cadre across Himachal against Congress stand on SIR: Rajeev Bindal

Shimla, Oct 27 (UNI) The BJP will organise marches across all four parliamentary constituencies of Himachal Pradesh under its “Save Democracy, Remove Anarchy” campaign to counter what it described as the Congress's misleading campaign against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls said BJP state president Rajiv Bindal on Tuesday.
He accused the Congress of creating confusion among people and undermining confidence in democratic institutions over the electoral roll revision exercise.
Bindal alleged that the Congress's opposition raised questions about its intentions regarding the inclusion of eligible voters in electoral rolls.
He questioned whether the Congress wanted the names of illegal immigrants included in voter lists and asked the party to clarify its objections to the verification process.
Bindal said the electoral system must ensure that every eligible Indian citizen is included in the voters' list while no ineligible person finds a place in it.
At the same time, no eligible voter should be removed from the rolls incorrectly, he added.
The BJP leader alleged that the Congress's political approach could create instability similar to that witnessed in Bangladesh. He urged the opposition party to present its objections to the SIR process on factual grounds and clarify its position.
Announcing the schedule of the proposed marches, Bindal said the Shimla parliamentary constituency march would be held in Shimla on November 1, with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma attending as the chief guest.
Leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur and former union Minister and Hamirpur MP Anurag Thakur would also participate in the programme, he said.
The march in the Kangra parliamentary constituency would be held at Dharamshala on October 30.
MP Rajiv Bharadwaj, former Assembly Speaker Vipin Singh Parmar, MLA Sudhir Sharma and MLA Pawan Kajal, among other party leaders and workers, would attend the event.
Bindal said marches in the Hamirpur and Mandi parliamentary constituencies would be organised on November 4.
The Hamirpur programme would be attended by Rajeev Bindal, Anurag Thakur, former state BJP president Satpal Singh Satti, former minister Bikram Thakur and MLA Randhir Sharma, among other leaders.
The Mandi march would see the participation of Jai Ram Thakur, former minister Suresh Bharadwaj, BJP chief spokesperson and MLA Rakesh Jamwal, former minister Govind Singh Thakur and MLA Anil Sharma.
Bindal said political parties should discuss important electoral processes responsibly and on the basis of facts. Respect for the Election Commission's constitutional role and transparency in electoral rolls were essential for strengthening democracy, he added.
He said the marches would bring together party leaders, MPs, MLAs, office-bearers and workers from across the state. Preparations were underway at the organisational level, he added.
The BJP would use the campaign to communicate its position on electoral transparency, fair elections and respect for constitutional institutions, Bindal said.
