BPCL’s commitment to skill development commendable: Jayant Chaudhary

Kochi, Sep 19 (UNI) union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and Minister of State for Education Jayant Chaudhary on Saturday commended Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) for its decade-long commitment to skill development through the Skill Development Institute (SDI), Kochi.
“BPCL’s decade-long commitment to skill development through SDI Kochi is commendable. What impressed me most is the focus on inclusive skilling and industry-aligned, future-ready training that truly empowers our youth,” Chaudhary said during his visit to SDI Kochi.
Chaudhary was accompanied by Secretary, Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Sujith Kumar, IAS.
He was welcomed by Chacko M. Jose, Executive Director (Kochi Refinery) and Director (Refinery), BPCL-Designate, Meganathan, General Manager (HR), BPCL, Sivakumar G.S., CEO, SDI Kochi, and senior representatives of BPCL and the Central and State skill development ecosystem.
Established in 2016 by the Skill Development Society, Kochi, chaired by BPCL, SDI Kochi is a flagship CSR initiative of the petroleum major. The institute has so far certified around 2,100 diploma holders and recorded a placement rate of 98 per cent.
SDI Kochi offers a six-month fully residential training programme at a nominal fee of Rs 5,000, making skill training accessible to youth from economically weaker sections.
The institute offers courses in Industrial Electrician, Industrial Welder, Electronic Manufacturing, Fitter Fabrication and Process Instrument Operator, designed to meet current industry requirements.
During the visit, the Minister interacted with hearing-impaired trainees and appreciated their confidence and commitment. He emphasised the importance of inclusive skilling in enabling young people to achieve self-reliance.
Chaudhary also lauded the SDI model and called for stronger collaboration among the government, industry and skill development institutions to create a skilled workforce and contribute to building an Atmanirbhar Bharat.
