BRIC-RGCB researchers develop novel nanopore sensors for early detection of Parkinson’s disease

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 29 (UNI) Researchers at the BRIC-Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (BRIC-RGCB) have developed an innovative nanopore-based sensing technology that could enable early detection and monitoring of biomarkers associated with neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
Biomarkers are biological indicators of diseases that can help in their early detection. However, identifying such biomarkers at an early stage using conventional techniques remains challenging as many of them are present at extremely low concentrations.
To overcome this limitation, a research team led by Dr Mahendran K. R., with contributions from PhD student Varsha Shaji and postdoctoral researcher Dr Neethu Puthumadathil, has developed novel “self-assembling dual-diameter” nanopore sensors capable of detecting biomarkers with high sensitivity.
