Young filmmakers should create short films on climate change, water scarcity: Telangana Dy CM Bhatti

Hyderabad, Oct 17 (UNI) Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka on Saturday called upon young filmmakers to use cinema as a medium to create public awareness about climate change, rising temperatures, water scarcity and energy conservation.
Addressing the Bathukamma Young Filmmaker Challenge Awards–2026 at Shilpakala Vedika here, he said short films could effectively communicate socially relevant messages and inspire people to adopt responsible practices.
The Deputy Chief Minister, who attended the event as the chief guest, said changing rainfall patterns, rising temperatures and the possible impact of a Super El Niño could pose challenges in the coming years.
He urged young filmmakers to focus on environmental protection, rainwater harvesting, preventing water wastage and maintaining ecological balance.
Emphasising the importance of water conservation, he said adequate water resources must be ensured for people, livestock and birds.
He also called for greater public awareness about electricity consumption and energy conservation.
Bhatti said the State Government was committed to developing Hyderabad into a major hub for Indian cinema, beyond its established position as a centre for the Telugu film industry.
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, Cinematography Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy and the State Cabinet were giving serious consideration to strengthening Hyderabad's position in the national film industry, he said.
Efforts were being made to attract leading personalities from across the country and provide the necessary infrastructure and conducive environment for the industry's growth.
Stating that Telangana had abundant creative talent, he said the government was committed to identifying and encouraging young directors, actors, producers and other artists.
The Telangana Film Development Corporation's initiative to organise the Young Filmmaker Challenge was aimed at providing emerging talent with a platform to showcase their abilities, he added.
Describing Bathukamma as a symbol of Telangana's cultural identity, social justice, equality and unity, the Deputy Chief Minister said the festival reflected how people from diverse backgrounds came together, just as flowers of different colours and fragrances formed Bathukamma.
He observed that narrating a compelling story through a two- or three-minute short film required considerable creativity and storytelling skills.
He encouraged participants not to lose heart if they did not win awards, stating that prizes were not the sole measure of success and that perseverance and continuous improvement were equally important.
Bhatti expressed happiness that 29 awards were presented across categories, including short films, songs, folk songs, influencers and essays.
He said he would watch the short films produced by the participants and explore opportunities to encourage promising filmmakers.
He reiterated that the government would extend support to young artists and filmmakers to help them gain recognition at national and international levels.
