TVK functionary among four arrested by DRI, 135 kg drug seized, Stalin calls TVK ‘Breaking Bad Party’

Chennai, Oct 17 (UNI) Officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has arrested a ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) functionary in Nagapattinam district and seized 135 kg of methamphetamine, a synthetic drug worth several hundred crore rupees, which was meant for smuggling to Sri Lanka.
According to reports, N Boopalan (42), an advocate and TVK’s Nagapattinam district executive committee member was arrested last evening after DRI officials raided his residence.
Based on intelligence that methamphetamine was being smuggled from Nagapattinam to Sri Lanka, a team of officials also raided the residences of one J.Suganathan, near Keezhvelur and seized the contraband from his house. The drugs had been reportedly transported from Chennai to Nagapattinam by car. Boopalan was suspended from the party following his arrest.
Meanwhile, Opposition DMK President M.K.Stalin on Saturday upped his ante against the TVK after DRI seized methamphetamine allegedly worth Rs.270 crore in Nagapattinam district and arrested four persons, including a TVK functionary.
In a post on X, Stalin described the party led by Chief Minister Vijay as a “Breaking Bad Party”, targetting its Nagapattinam district functionary Boopalan, who had also served as the party’s election in-charge for the Keezhvelur Assembly constituency. He alleged that preliminary investigations indicated that Boopalan had concealed 135 kg of methamphetamine.
Taking a dig at Vijay’s repeated remarks on eradicating drug menace in the State, Stalin questioned whether the TVK leadership had been preaching against narcotics while allegedly harbouring people involved in drug-related activities within its ranks.
"If this much drug was seized in a single raid, there is an urgent need to find out how many more people are behind these people and round up the entire network", he added.
The DMK leader further mocked the TVK over its approach to political opponents, saying it should identify alleged drug-related elements and distributors within its own ranks rather than counting Communists using Tahsildars. He was referring to a controversial order issued by Guziliamparai Tahsildar M.Ayyasamy on August 18, 2026, directing revenue officials and Village Assistants to collect the names and addresses of members and leaders of the CPI and CPI(M) in Dindigul district following a land dispute. The order has been revoked after backlash from several parties and protests from Left parties and allies.
"Instead of counting communists through the tahsildars, first count how many Leo Das and Powder Saraths are in the TVK districtwise", Stalin said.
Having earned the name of 'Bad Party' within five months of assuming charge, the TVK has earned the next stage promotion as "Breaking Bad Party", he added.
