BRS corporators protest GHMC move to rename Annapurna canteens

Hyderabad, June 28 (UNI) Tension prevailed at the GHMC headquarters today as BRS corporators staged a protest against the government's decision to rename Annapurna Canteens as Indira Canteens.
Holding placards, the corporators demanded that the original name of the scheme, which provides meals to the poor for just Rs 5, be retained.
The protest intensified when BRS activists attempted to enter the GHMC office premises but were stopped by the police at the gate, leading to a brief standoff.
Former minister Talasani Srinivas Yadav also joined the protest and sat alongside the corporators in solidarity.
Speaking on the occasion, Talasani slammed Congress government for what he called an arbitrary move.
“The Annapurna Canteen scheme was launched under the leadership of former Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR) to serve the poor and migrants in Hyderabad. If there is an intention to change the name, it should be done through a GHMC Council resolution with majority approval,” he said.
He further added that while the Congress is free to name its own schemes, renaming existing welfare initiatives like Annapurna Canteens is unnecessary and unjustified.
“The Congress made many promises to the people. Call your new schemes whatever you wish, but do not alter existing ones that are already serving the people well,” he stated.
