BC leaders demand 42 pc quota before local body polls; threaten statewide protests

Hyderabad, June 28 (UNI) A roundtable meeting of Backward Class (BC) organisations held at a private hotel in Lakdikapool on Saturday demanded that the Telangana Government implement 42 per cent reservations for BCs in local body elections before initiating the electoral process.
The meeting, chaired by former BC Commission chairman Dr Vakulabharanam Krishna Mohan Rao and led by Rajya Sabha MP and National BC Welfare Association President R Krishnaiah, saw participation from over 90 BC caste associations across the state.
Krishnaiah warned that no local body elections would be allowed without constitutionally mandated BC quotas. Criticising the delay in securing Presidential assent for reservation Bills, he accused the government of lacking commitment and threatened large-scale protests if action is not taken soon.
Former Minister Dr V Srinivas Goud and social scientist Naragoni also highlighted the under-representation of BCs and called for immediate corrective measures.
Dr Rao announced that BC leaders will soon meet the Governor and the State Election Commission to push for action and are considering an all-party delegation to the President.
The roundtable passed key resolutions demanding release of empirical data, intervention by the Governor, and legal compliance by the State. BC organisations have warned of mandal-level agitations and a possible boycott of upcoming local body elections if their demands are ignored.
