Bengaluru, June 28 (UNI) In a move likely to deepen the leadership churn within the Karnataka Congress, Minister KN Rajanna today openly signaled his interest in donning the organisational mantle currently held by Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, hinting at a possible claim to the powerful post of KPCC President.
“I will leave my ministerial position if needed. I’m happy to serve the party and strengthen the organisation. The Congress high command’s decision is final, and I will abide by it,” Rajanna told reporters, remarks that are being widely read as a veiled expression of his willingness to step into Shivakumar’s role.
While Rajanna stopped short of explicitly naming the KPCC presidency, his statement came in response to direct questions on whether he expects to be handed the party’s top organisational post in Karnataka. Though he denied having “expectations,” his articulation of political ambition and criticism of the party's current power structure left little doubt about his intentions.
“There are no saints in politics. Everyone fights for power. But I will fight to serve the party with dignity,” he said, pointedly adding that he would prioritise party work over ministerial responsibilities.
The statement gains weight against the backdrop of simmering discontent within the Karnataka Congress over Shivakumar’s dual role as Deputy CM and KPCC President. A section of leaders believe he should relinquish the party post, in keeping with the "one man, one post" principle. However, Shivakumar is seen as unwilling to let go, as he eyes the Chief Minister’s chair amid an unresolved power-sharing deal with CM Siddaramaiah.
Congress high command has so far resisted pressure to make a change, seeking stability ahead of upcoming local polls. But Rajanna’s public expression of interest has added a new dimension to the internal contest, potentially setting the stage for a broader reshuffle later this year.
