BRS MLAs threaten protest at CM’s residence over Hyderabad water crisis

Hyderabad, Oct 24 (UNI) Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) legislators representing constituencies across Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy districts on Saturday warned that they, along with city residents, would lay siege to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s residence if the State government failed to immediately lift Godavari water from the Kannepalli pump house to avert a drinking water crisis in the state capital.
A high-level BRS delegation comprising MLAs D. Sudheer Reddy, Madhavaram Krishna Rao, K.P. Vivekanand Goud, Marri Rajashekar Reddy, and Bandari Laxma Reddy, accompanied by former minister Errabelli Dayakar Rao and former MLA Gandra Venkata Ramana Reddy, conducted a field inspection of the Kannepalli (Lakshmi) pump house—a key component of the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme (KLIS).
Addressing a press conference after the inspection, Quthbullapur MLA Vivekanand Goud alleged that despite abundant water availability, the Congress administration deliberately stalled pumping operations, allowing over 750 TMC of precious Godavari water to drain downstream into the sea since June.
He asserted that lifting even 250 TMC would have recharged drying reservoirs, replenished minor irrigation tanks, and boosted groundwater tables.
"Just 10 TMC is sufficient to satisfy the drinking water needs of Hyderabad for an entire year. Instead of operating the pumps, the government is playing with people's lives," Goud said, recalling that BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao (KTR) had red-flagged potential supply shortages back in July in view of El Niño conditions.
Highlighting ground realities, Malkajgiri MLA Marri Rajashekar Reddy pointed out that several localities in Greater Hyderabad were grappling with low water pressure and getting municipal water only once every three days.
He noted that officials were citing depleted storage in Singur and Manjeera reservoirs, yet the government refused to utilise Godavari flows.
L.B. Nagar legislator D. Sudheer Reddy accused the administration of orchestrating an artificial scarcity, pointing out that daily commercial water tanker bookings had spiked to nearly 7,000 in October alone.
He also hit out at the regime for failing to carry out essential repairs at the Medigadda barrage while allegedly sitting on complaints regarding suspected sabotage of its piers.
Former minister Errabelli Dayakar Rao and ex-MLA Gandra Venkata Ramana Reddy charged the Revanth Reddy dispensation with vindictive politics aimed at discrediting the Kaleshwaram project at the expense of public welfare.
They demanded the immediate resumption of pumping operations at Kannepalli to secure Hyderabad's drinking water reserves before the situation slips out of control.
