Chakma civil bodies seek Governor’s Rule in CADC

Aizawl, June 12 (UNI)Three major Chakma civil society organisations have submitted a joint memorandum to Mizoram Governor Lt. Gen. (Retd.) VK Singh, urging imposition of Governor’s Rule in the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) for six months, citing a worsening political impasse and financial crisis.
The Young Chakma Association (YCA), Mizoram Chakma Students’ Union (MCSU), and Chakma Mahila Samiti said in their memorandum on Thursday that the CADC has plunged into a "deep crisis", with yet another change in government imminent. They alleged that political instability has gripped the council and that even now, elected members are being lured with offers to switch sides for power.
They pointed out that the CADC has witnessed five government collapses during the previous term, and two more under the current term, a situation they described as a mockery of democracy. The groups appealed to the Governor to intervene in the interest of the people.
Citing acute financial distress, the memorandum stated that salaries have not been paid to council employees for the last four months. They claimed that the council’s finances have been steadily deteriorating, with a deficit building up to nearly eight months into the current fiscal year.
The organisations also alleged widespread irregularities in appointments, with over 200 jobs allegedly created illegally since 2022. These, they said, have only worsened the financial situation of the CADC and necessitate an immediate review and corrective action.
The civil bodies urged the Governor to restore stability and accountability by placing the council under direct rule for six months.
